Western Australia is made for road trips. Long stretches of coastline, quiet country towns, towering forests and wide-open landscapes make travelling by campervan one of the easiest ways to experience the state at your own pace.
Instead of planning your trip around hotel check-ins and fixed locations, a campervan gives you the freedom to wake up somewhere new, take the scenic route and stay a little longer when you find somewhere you love.
If you’re planning your first campervan adventure in WA, here’s what you need to know before setting off.
Why Explore Western Australia by Campervan?
Western Australia is vast, and many of its most memorable destinations are best experienced by road.
South of Perth, a network of sealed roads connects destinations including Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River, Denmark and Albany, making the South West particularly suited to self-drive holidays.
Travelling by campervan also means your transport, accommodation and many everyday essentials travel with you.
Stop for lunch overlooking the ocean. Spend the afternoon exploring a walking trail. Find a campsite for the evening and enjoy dinner outside as the sun goes down.
The journey becomes part of the holiday.
Choosing the Right Campervan
Start by thinking about how you like to travel.
A couple or solo traveller may prefer something compact and cosy, while families or groups will appreciate extra sleeping and living space.
At Indi Ocean, Chloe is designed for up to two travellers and combines a relaxed boho-inspired interior with a cosy layout.
Lilly, meanwhile, accommodates up to four and offers additional space as well as an electronic pop-up rooftop tent.
Beyond sleeping capacity, consider what is included in your campervan. Having a fridge, kitchen equipment, solar-powered electrics, lighting, charging points and camping furniture already onboard can make a significant difference once you’re on the road.
Where Can You Camp?
One of the most important parts of planning a WA campervan holiday is understanding where overnight camping is permitted.
You generally can’t simply park anywhere and stay overnight. Camping in Western Australia is regulated, and travellers should use licensed caravan parks, designated campgrounds or other locations where camping is specifically permitted.
Clearly marked overnight rest stops may also be used for up to 24 consecutive hours, although Main Roads WA emphasises that these are intended primarily for rest and fatigue management rather than as holiday campsites.
Always check the rules for your destination before settling in for the night.
Do You Need a Powered Campsite?
Not necessarily.
Many WA national park campgrounds are deliberately simple, with basic facilities and no mains electricity. Parks and Wildlife notes that most park campgrounds have no power, and some also have no running water or mobile coverage.
Indi Ocean campervans have a solar-linked 12V electrical system that powers everyday essentials including the fridge, lighting, USB ports and onboard sockets, helping make unpowered camping possible.
Powered sites can still be useful when you want access to caravan park facilities or mains electricity, but you don’t need to stay at one every night.
Plan Your Distances
Distances in WA can be much greater than they appear on a map.
Allow plenty of time, avoid packing too much driving into a single day, and plan fuel stops before entering quieter regional areas.
This becomes particularly important on longer journeys toward Esperance or the Golden Outback, where travellers are advised to check road and weather conditions and plan food and fuel stops in advance.
Pack Less Than You Think
One advantage of hiring an equipped campervan is that you don’t need to bring your entire house with you.
With Indi Ocean, many camping and kitchen essentials are already provided. Bring your clothes, toiletries, food and drinks, weather-appropriate gear, and whatever helps make the road feel like home.
Then leave some room for the unexpected.
Ready for the Road?
A Western Australian campervan trip doesn’t need to be complicated.
Choose a van that suits the way you travel, plan a flexible route, book your campsites where required, and give yourself enough time to enjoy the places you discover along the way.
The best road trips aren’t about reaching the destination as quickly as possible.
They’re about everything that happens in between.
