One of the best things about campervan travel is how little you really need.
Your transport, bed, kitchen and living space are already travelling with you, which means packing for a road trip doesn’t need to feel like moving house.
Here’s what we’d recommend bringing.
Clothes for Changing Weather
Western Australian weather can change significantly depending on where and when you’re travelling.
Pack:
- Comfortable everyday clothing
- Warm layers
- A light rain jacket
- Swimwear
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sandals or thongs
- Hat
- Sunglasses
Even during warmer months, evenings near the coast can feel cool.
Food & Drinks
Start with enough food for your first day or two, then top up along the way.
Bring:
- Drinking water
- Easy breakfasts
- Snacks for driving days
- Ingredients for simple meals
- Coffee or tea
- Reusable water bottles
Shopping locally along the route also gives you an excuse to explore regional bakeries, markets and local produce.
Toiletries & Personal Essentials
Don’t forget:
- Toothbrush and toiletries
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Personal medications
- Quick-dry towel if needed
- Small day bag
A small torch or headlamp is also surprisingly useful around camp after dark.
Tech
Road trips are better when you occasionally put your phone away, but a few essentials still help.
Bring:
- Phone
- Charging cables
- Power bank
- Camera
- Downloaded maps
- Offline music or podcasts
Mobile coverage can be limited in regional areas and some WA park campgrounds may have no mobile or data service at all.
Download anything important before leaving town.
Camping Extras
Many of the bulky items are already taken care of when travelling with Indi Ocean.
Our vans include kitchen essentials such as cutlery, crockery, utensils, pots, pans and chopping boards, along with camping chairs and a table.
Bedding and linen can also be provided if required.
That leaves you with more room for the things that actually make the trip yours.
What You Probably Don’t Need
Avoid packing for every imaginable situation.
Too much luggage quickly takes over a campervan.
If you’re unsure, ask yourself:
Will I realistically use this during the trip?
If the answer is no, leave it at home.
Pack light, stay organised and keep some empty space.
You’ll appreciate it after a week on the road.
